Animals in Disaster Advisory Group

In addition to preserving human life, saving animal life is imperative to the LSU Stephenson Disaster Management Institute’s mission. In preparation for large-scale disasters, animals are an important factor in the decisions people make to provide for themselves and their families. Animals are largely dependent on human care in the face of a disaster, and without appropriate attention animals may endure unnecessary suffering. Additionally, animals have proven to be the deciding factor for humans when choosing whether or not to evacuate from an approaching disaster.

The Animals in Disaster Advisory Group (ADAG) was formed by SDMI and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) to address these issues and lead a coalition of involved and interested organizations to reduce the harm to animals as a result of disasters. ADAG is made up of individuals representing local, state, and the federal government, academia, and private institutions, with expertise in emergency animal preparedness, response, and recovery matters who will utilize a strategic approach to improving the care of animals during an emergency. The ultimate objective is to save lives and prevent the suffering of both humans and animals involved in a disaster.

ADAG works to:

  • Save and protect human and animals lives
  • Prevent animal suffering
  • Support and fund animal care equipment and capabilities
  • Create solutions for the various needs of pets and other animals which arise as a result of disasters and other emergencies
  • Bring various animal care providers and organizations together involved in animal disaster response to coordinate efforts, share resources and focus attention on the need
  • Capture, document, and share best practices in dealing with animals in disaster
  • Provide online information resources and helpful information
  • Provide subject matter expertise as needed to conduct specific applied research and develop new means to save the lives of animals in disaster
